Theme Thursday: Lights! Or Bad Photos, Happy Birthdays

Joining Cari and her photographing mass of motif minded mobsters for another round of Theme Thursday, this week: Lights!

...Which I forgot completely about. So shuffling through my phone this morning I found some horrible beauties I thought I would subject you all to, thereby claiming my title as Worst Phone Photographer of All Time.

And, to retain my title as Worst Mom Blogger of All Time, I realized Momo's birthday came and went with nary a peep from the Web Log. And I think this photo also solidifies my alternate title as Worst Cake Decorator of All Time. But don't let the haphazard frosting job and candles all askew fool you: that cake was delish. So there, function before form. Happy 6th Birthday, Naomi Margaret!

Lights!

To celebrate her birthday she asked to go to a fair. It is a known and highly prized fact that the Family Es does not "do" fairs. I think the main attraction that exists between Obi and I (me? someone shout out the right pronoun, please) is that we both suffer from sensory overload and things like fairs make us feel like hiding in a closet and weeping. Well I don't think that's Obi's exact reaction, but he's not here to describe his specific and equally pitiful reflex, so we will leave it at both of us weeping together in a closet.

We went to a fair when the big boys were little, and it is known as the fair of their childhood. This one shall be known as the fair of the little ones' childhood. Isaac will probably not remember, but above is the photographic evidence to prove that he too had a childhood fair.

By the way, I love that picture! I was actually really pleased with it and sent it to my sister who didn't reply at all. Then I had to text and ask her about it and she just replied that she couldn't tell what it is. I told her it's an artsy shot of Isaac on a fair ride, and she was still not impressed. I hate when I have to explain I'm being artsy, just kinda ruins it. Next time I will send my cool pics to some hipster friends who will appreciate me. So...I'm in the market for friends, I guess.

Oh! And also...

Obi turned 40! In an artful, crafty way I purposely tried to highlight the lights here to match the Theme. And to obscure the fact that this was a "store-boughten" cake, and therefore would completely overshadow Momo's cake on the pleasing-to-the-eye scale. But Obi is still cute no matter what, homemade birthday crown and all.

Happy Birthday my loved ones, the Web Log forgets you not.

  1. I also hate having to explain artsy. We are also not fair people. Or at least non-permanent, set up on concrete for the week, rides people. I can do like expos and stuff. And in all truthfulness, I like the flare of candles and the look of the first cake better. It's homey. And tells a story.

  2. I appreciate your art, dear friend!
And I love your phone pics.
And I love visiting here. I always leave with a smile and a good feeling in my heart. : )
    Happy Birthday to your loves.

  3. I want Momo's cake with my coffee, right now. Fairs are my nightmare too - but weirdly (or maybe not so weirdly) Tremayne loves them, and so do the kids. Move over Annie; Becky has a new and appreciative-of-hipster-pictures-friend, Regina. Oh wait, my phone doesn't even get pictures. So cute, all of it... Happy 40th birthday Obi!

You are married to an old man! Hahaha!

  5. Send me all your arty shots. Except I really, really love fairs (those parking lot fairs that spring up overnight in the summer like strange exotic mushrooms? My favorite. The more rickety the rides and the more ominous the carnies, the better), so we may have to break up.

Also, I'm about 90% sure that "me" would be the correct pronoun in that sentence. "The main attraction between me", and not "the main attraction between I". But, my brain COULD be hopelessly addled from one too many Zipper rides and Gravitron spins.

  6. I'm not artsy but I promise to gush over your artsy photos and pretend that I am...artsy that is, not pretending to gush because that would be sincere!
So long as a cake tastes good I could care less what it looks like, I agree on the function before form notion on baked goods!
I'm cracking up over the description of you and Obi weeping in the closet over the sensory overload a fair brings, I avoid them too. We did go to the State Fair in Vermont once, but that was because a very kind priest came up to our family and insisted we go and take the kids. He was so kind and slipped Pete a $50 to cover the cost of entry, I'll never forget that kindness and we DID enjoy that trip to the fair.
    Happy Birthday to Obi!

  8. Happy Birthday Momo and Obi! I hate fairs too (and amusements parks and any other crowded place).

The correct pronoun would be "me" in the sentence "between Obi and me". You use "I" when the word is used as a subject and "me" when it's an object. "between Obi and me" is a prepositional phrase and so the words "Obi and me" are the objects of the preposition "between". An easy way to determine whether to use "me" or "I" is to substitute "she" or "her" and see which one sounds better. "between Obi and she" sounds odd, while "between Obi and her" sounds right. You can thank Shurley English Homeschool for that English lesson...I only know it because I had to teach it. LOL

I like your artsy shot...very artsy. And, your cake decorating skills rival mine...although I think I win the worst cake decorator of the year award because I don't even put pretty pink sprinkles on my cakes.

  14. Wait. Are you on the instagram? That is the HAVEN for not explaining artsy photos! You can put up a photo of a nosehair and people be all like "where have you been all my life, nose hair of glory???"

  15. Love the movement of the fair picture :)

  16. Rebekah, I HATE when I miss your posts. Argh. Stupid Yahoo ruins my life.

I love all your photos because they are of your people, and I just adore your people. Your description of you in a closet made me laugh and laugh. But reading it actually made me realize that I too feel that way about fairs, but I act like I don't. I take my kids all the time to crap like that that I hate. So now I feel like a phony. But at least we have another thing in common.

Send me your phone number. We can be photo texting buddies. Unless you join Instagram and then WHAT UP!?!?!?! You will have the Darr family in your face like 17 times a day. Which is your dream, right? Your dreeeeeeeeeam. (That's me hypnotizing you.) (And now this is normal me putting the kibosh on crazy me.) Night night!
